Sensory Overload: Free States vs. Slave States ~Oh How Far We’ve Come…

Note from March 08 2005: This post gets a lot of hits. I actually prefer the map that shows country by country - most of us are relative shades of purple!

I reserve the right to delete or modify inappropriate language.By the look of the maps, apparently things have gotten worse. It is true that the Christian Reconstructionists who are now in the driver’s seat of this country are pro-slavery. It is written plainly in their doctrine. As a Pagan, I am also in their sights. Only, they plan to stone or burn me. Maybe I’ll get lucky and just be enslaved? *sigh* We are in a fine kettle of fish, folks.
Your map misrepresents both Kansas and the Nebraska Territory as “open to slavery” in pre-civil war America.
In fact, these were all “Free” territories. It is obvious that you have misrepresented these regions so as to besmirch the people of these regions today, who faithfully cleave to conservative values. Values that were the basis for the Abolitionist movement.
It was the “Nuanced” Copperhead crowd in New York and Boston who rioted against the Civil War, and Abraham Lincoln had to have arrested. Interesting that today we have a passel of self-styled “progressives” who are virulently anti-jewish and anti-Israel. Same bunch, one could argue, as were the defenders of the Slave states….
Where to start, dear “Anonymous”? First of all, let me tell you that your cowardice has made reconsider my commenting policy. From now on, no anonymous posters will be allowed on this blog. I’m just tired of it.
Ok, first off. This is not my map, please click on the link and argue with them first of all. Second of all, the territories you mention allowed slaves in that they didn’t ban the practice. It is not to “besmirch” anyone but simply to notice a pretty odd coincidence. The “conservative values” of the day were about quoting the bible to support slavery, you moron.
Secondly, there are a whole lot more Jews in the progressive movement than who are republians, the sad origins of the neo-con movement notwithstanding. How dare you imply that I am anti-semitic? And are you really trying to tell me there are more Jews in Nebraska than in New York? And that a state like Massachusetts was some sort of epicenter for slavery? You sure are grasping at straws here. Yes, people for and against abolition of slavery were found in every state - just as our states are actually a lot more complicated than this map would indicate. I just couldn’t find a good map that would indicate country by country voting - which would have to make the majority of us in shades of purple, a color conservatives seem to hate with a passion.
In fact, a Jewish ethic of face-to-face compassionate imperative, taking care of the fatherless children, and other traditions - as well a high value placed on education are things I highly respect and have studied at the graduate level. Thinkers such as the writers of the Talmud, which largely go unread by Christians and which are fascinating, as well as some of my favorites such as Maimonides, Buber, Derrida and Levinas are to be respected, and I have even had interest in the mystical traditions of Kabbalah. But it is a little scary to me to see so-called Christians forgetting the good news that they are enjoined to proclaim, and to repress what specifically Christian behavior is really all about.
Those who use any religion selectively to pursue an anti-religious agenda (in our case, of mostly unilateral and aggressive crusade, crony capitalism, and the exploitation of resources for personal gain in a treasonous war profiteering)are beneath my contempt, no matter what the “stated” religion is. I am, however, for justice and liberty, whether here or in Israel or Palestine or Dafur or Iraq or anywhere else.
My sense of values is based on traditional American values - many of which are disregarded by the current regime and its misled followers. If you would remember your apocalyptic strain, you were warned of false prophets, and that many would listen. Fools. Hypocrites.
I just want to say to VirusHead this:
Persia is not a country. Iran is. Rhodesia is no longer a country. Zimbabwe is. Palestine is not a country. It is not even a territory. It is nothing but an idea, an idea that will perhaps one day materialize into a country if the “Palestinian” people ever come to their senses. So please, don’t refer to it as one.
Also, remember that it was Abe Lincoln, a REPUBLICAN, who freed the slaves in America.
1) I never referred to them as countries. I am simply referring to areas of injustice placed on the globe.
2) I am not against republicans. I agree with conservative fiscal responsibility and other issues. I am against radical neo-cons - a whole different ballgame.
3) Since you have nothing constructive to add by your many hostile comments, I wonder why you bother and I ask you formally not to visit or to post again.
Andrew: most people who have taken a 100-level American history course in college know that the Republican party as represented by Abraham Lincoln no longer exists. As a Republican today, I’m not sure you would want to claim him; it may offend your “moral” values. And please, don’t imply that he did it out of purely humanitarian interests: the goal was to keep the union together, and it worked. That means we’re stuck with people like you, too.
Amen
