    Bush holding hands with who?

Bush holding hands with Prince Abdullah.

It’s not the first time they’ve been seen holding hands. Remember the G8 summit in France in – what was it – 2003? There were photos taken then too – do a quick images search and you’ll find it. I’d post them, but I’m not sure if I’m legally allowed.

Sure, I had a wee giggle to myself when I saw Mr. Macho holding hands. In another way, though, it was friendly and respectful of cultural difference – it was one area in which Bush allowed himself to be somewhat open to that diplomatic ground in-between.

If he might pursue his policies the same way – and with perhaps different friends – we might be getting somewhere at last.

In any case, I’d rather hear about the substance of what they discussed.

    Mother’s Day for Peace

Codepink, the action group for women for peace, has posted this as a message for Mother’s Day. I thought I’d pass it on to help us think in terms of what Tori Amos calls “a mother of a mother revolution.”

    Julia Ward Howe’s Mother’s Day Proclamation – 1870

    Arise then…women of this day!
Arise, all women who have hearts!
Whether your baptism be of water or of tears!
    Say firmly:
“We will not have questions answered by irrelevant agencies,
Our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage,
    For caresses and applause.
Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn
All that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience.
We, the women of one country,
Will be too tender of those of another country
To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs.”

From the voice of a devastated Earth a voice goes up with
Our own. It says: “Disarm! Disarm!
The sword of murder is not the balance of justice.”
Blood does not wipe our dishonor,
    Nor violence indicate possession.
As men have often forsaken the plough and the anvil
    At the summons of war,
Let women now leave all that may be left of home
For a great and earnest day of counsel.
Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead.
Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means
Whereby the great human family can live in peace…
Each bearing after his own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar,
    But of God -
In the name of womanhood and humanity, I earnestly ask
That a general congress of women without limit of nationality,
May be appointed and held at someplace deemed most convenient
And the earliest period consistent with its objects,
To promote the alliance of the different nationalities,
The amicable settlement of international questions,
The great and general interests of peace.

Howe was a poet who co-published the anti-slavery newspaper The Commonwealth with her husband (Samuel Gridley Howe). In 1861 she wrote the words to “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” After her experience of the realities of war (Civil War) Howe became active in the woman’s suffrage movement and advocated world peace and equality in all its forms. In 1870, she issued the above call, hoping that women would arise and work together to oppose all forms of war, to transcend national and ethnic boundaries, to recognize what we hold in common above what divides us, and to resolve to achieve peaceful resolutions to conflicts.

She was not able to get formal recognition of a “Mother’s Day for Peace,” but Anne Jarvis (inspired by her mother and by Howe) was able to get Mother’s Day as a “memorial day” going. The first “Mother’s Day” was celebrated in West Virginia in 1907. It spread to 45 states and – and the official national holiday was declared by Woodrow Wilson in 1914.

In 1908 Howe became the first woman elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

We don’t think of Mother’s Day as being related to the work of peace or the remembering of death and the consequences of war. Maybe we should revive the origins of this tradition.

You’re also inclined to ease people’s suffering as best you can, although sometimes, all you can do is listen. The world is a painful sight to you, and you often wonder how we can do such horrible things to each other. You may be an activist, working to right injustices. You believe very strongly in the healing power of love, and treasure every minute, because you are well aware of how quickly our lives are over.

Which Disney Character is your Alter Ego?
    created with QuizFarm.com

I was acually hoping for Maleficent – Cruella de Ville is close, I guess. Sleeping Beauty, yeah, ok. Goofy is just odd. I like that I’m more like the Beast than like Cinderella, and more like Peter Pan than Donald Duck. But more like Pinocchio than Snow White? That’s a little disturbing- grin. Am I a little “wooden” – I certainly never wanted to be “a real boy.” Grin.

    Bolton

John Bolton is the kind of man with whom I would want to stand at Armageddon, if it should be my lot to be on hand for what is forecast to be the final battle between good and evil in this world.
    — Jesse Helms, January 2001, as quoted in The Nation, May 2, 2005 edition.

Interesting in this regard is that it was Bolton’s signature on the letter to Kofi Annan in May 2002 renouncing any role for the U.S. in the International Criminal Court. That his office had no jurisdiction on questions of human rights or international justice issues didn’t seem to matter.

Some of these guys really do want to see the end of the world. They think they will survive it.
On”incoming,” Bolton staunchly advocates the revival of the “Star Wars” missile defense system; on “outgoing,” he rejects the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty. On the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, Bolton declared that “CTBT is dead.” He favored bombing Serbia.

I don’t think that Bolton will pass muster – not just because of his kiss up, kick down behavior, but because is another of these hopelessly corrupt Bushites. It is astounding to me that anyone can believe these are religious people.

According to the April 9, 2001 issue of Washington Post, Bolton is motivated by more than his ultra-rightwing ideology. Like many of these others, he also likes to be on the take and has no problem with conflict of interest. While he was promoting diplomatic recognition of Taiwan before various congressional committees in the 1990s, Bolton was being paid by the government of Taiwan for “research papers on UN membership issues involving Taiwan.” Bolton has denied that his testimony was in any way tied to the fee paid by the Taiwanese – and if you believe that…

But all these problems pale in comparision with the way he strong-armed the intelligence community into “producing the evidence” he and Bush wanted to see in order to justify their pre-planned war in Iraq. That intelligence was, of course, faulty. Whether it was an “honest” coercion based on ideology or whether it was always known and intended to deceive the American people depends on your interpretation. The ultimate result of it all does not. He should not be promoted – he should be brought to trial.
