Take Action New Orleans Wages

Hand Fair Wages for Hurricane Victims

Every single Democrat and Independent in the House of Representatives have united to co-sponsor a bill to overturn Bush’s anti-worker and anti-family decree that benefits only the Haliburtons and other big companies seeking big contracts for Gulf cleanup.

Now, we have an opportunity to defeat another misguided Bush policy—his decree that cuts wages for Katrina survivors hired by federal rebuilding and clean up contractors. Please, sign a petition that we will send to every single Republican member of Congress demanding that they co-sponsor the “Fair Wages for Hurricane Victims Act” and bring it to a vote!

“Rebuilding the Gulf Coast must mean more than just profits for big corporations. It must empower those recently displaced to make a decent wage while they rebuild their shattered communities and lives. I strongly believe that we should rebuild the Gulf Coast for the victims of Katrina—not just the privileged few. In the America I believe in, everyone that works hard should be entitled to a decent wage—especially the people we want to help get back on their feet after this enormous disaster.

Congressman George Miller has just introduced legislation (H.R. 3763) to reinstate the wage protections that were suspended by decree of President Bush. I am calling on you and all members of Congress to publicly sign on as a co-sponsor to Rep. Miller’s legislation and to push to bring it up for a vote.”

The simple principle of a fair wage for a fair day’s work is one of the foundations
of social and economic security. Any practice or policy which denies those who are struggling to rebuild their lives not only flies in the face of this principle, it is inhumane and unjust. America is supposed to be a land of opportunity for the down-trodden, not a place where the “Haves” enrich themselves on the backs of the “Have Nots”!
