I read “The Problem with Fundamentalists” because the J Witnesses came to our rural door, today. My wife told me I was very kind to them, even though I made them stand in the cold. Anyway, your poem made me think of this quote from the UB.
“A doctrinal fetish will lead mortal man to betray himself into the clutches of bigotry, fanaticism, superstition, intolerance, and the most atrocious of barbarous cruelties.”
Not THAT is the real problem with fundamentalists. . . in my book. ;0}
Keep drinking the good stuff, and go for five more.

Scooper - Your tee shirt is still my favorite item of clothing (and it has the advantage of totally confusing the parents at the nearby elementary school). I also appreciate the fact that without your webring transfer, I wouldn’t have thought of the Virtual Church of Benevolent Deities, Inc. for at least another year. I’ve been lurking, and I think your blog has ratcheted up a couple of levels of sophistication in the last year. Excellent stuff.
Michael - I hear you on doctrinal fetishes. It’s just easier to rely on the interpretations of others than it is to have to think through these things over a lifetime. The primary stumbling blocks to authentic faith and wisdom seem to involve 1) confused priorities, 2) binary thinking, and 3) intolerance of and inability to navigate complexity. Still - remember that they are just doing what they think is right. Internally, there are more significant problems, but from the outside - well, there are worse things than door-to-door service. Thanks for the comment!

Damn, the struggle has gone on a long time, hasn’t it? We made our first appearance as Reconstitution after election day, 2004 (we’d previously been The Progressive Re-Blog,) and we never run out of things to rage against. I wonder if we ever will.
