I heard somewhere that it was actually focus grouped. The idea is that "Democratic" is a virtue whereas "Democrat" is a liberal. This has been annoying me for years, but at this point I'm mainly just impressed by the fact that they could get enough people in lockstep on this that folks are starting to do it unconsciously.
