Contagious Thoughts, Mutating as Needed

Fox News links Neo-Nazi report to US Democratic Party Coverage!

This is an example of how misunderstanding is cultivated by Fox News.

A Neo-Nazi group has reportedly taken over an East German village. This is the link to the story:

Look how they decided to link it.

Neo-Nazi links to Democratic news!

That link just takes part of the name and links it to the Fox News coverage of the U.S. Democratic Party:

And here is where it shows up!

Anyone should know that there is no correlation between these parties, but enough people have already been misinformed that this serves to reinforce a very mistaken idea. American Democrats are not in any way like Nazis. To the contrary, many in the Republican/Tea Party groups are affiliated with such ideologies.

It seems like a small thing, but it isn’t. I want to know who did that and why. I’ve left a voicemail, left a comment on the post, and sent the following message to the newsdesk manager.

Please contact me. I would like to know who was responsible for linking a German Neo-Nazi article to your coverage of the American Democratic Party.

I would like to try to give you the benefit of the small doubt, and assume that the webmaster is ignorant of history.

If not, this is an odious method of propaganda. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

I would like a name, please.

Thank you,

P.S. Here is the source code:

I will update this post if they do me the courtesy of replying.

I suspect the linking is automated, and what you are seeing was done without any human involvement. See, e.g. http://drupal.org/project/keyword_link. Here is what it looks like on another one of the pages: http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2011/01/06/jennifer-anistons-peop les-choice-look-love-hate/. They seem to have defined topic pages, and I seriously doubt an actual human does the linking.

It’s also a prime example of annoying SEO nonsense. There are a bunch of parties around the world with the phrase “democratic party” as part of the name, all across the political spectrum. Someone was too lazy or stupid to realize this was going to happen.
