When I&#8217;ve had more time to process all of this a little more I hope to write another, but I hope that this will serve the purposes of the occasion. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Nexus<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p><em>In Memory of Bob Detweiler<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nWe gathered here today as one<br \/>\nMake an unlikely flock,<br \/>\nSo here is just a simple rhyme<br \/>\nTo honor our good doc.<\/p>\n<p>A teacher he, who greeted us,<br \/>\nAnd beckoned from the door,<br \/>\nAnd for each question that was asked<br \/>\nPresented us four more.<\/p>\n<p>Some Jupiter in him &#8211; and Pan &#8211;<br \/>\nA touch of Socrates,<br \/>\nSt. Nikolas for splintered ones<br \/>\nTo put each mind at ease.<\/p>\n<p>Grandfather to my Adelheid,<br \/>\nThe alpine horn he blew.<br \/>\n(He had some running joke &#8211; I think &#8211;<br \/>\nWith every friend he knew).<\/p>\n<p>Imagination disciplined<br \/>\nIs what he taught us best &#8211;<br \/>\nTo wrestle with the text unique<br \/>\nTo BE THERE was the rest &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>And maybe most in stories full<br \/>\nOf shaming, war and pain,<br \/>\nThe book shows more than it can know &#8211;<br \/>\nComplexity constrained.<\/p>\n<p>To find &#8211; in flesh becoming word &#8211;<br \/>\nA testimony true,<br \/>\nBehind the fiction, structures live<br \/>\nTransforming me and you.<\/p>\n<p>When each of us recalls that sense<br \/>\nAt other vineyards found,<br \/>\nWe fire &#8211; like the synapse jumps &#8211;<br \/>\nNew paths and meanings ground.<\/p>\n<p>Extraordinary gift it is<br \/>\nWhen such a man as this<br \/>\nCombines the voices that he knows<br \/>\nAs nexus of the mix.<\/p>\n<p>For bare survival&#8217;s not enough<br \/>\nThere should be celebration,<br \/>\nAnd dignity &#8211; respect and grace &#8211;<br \/>\nAn artful life &#8211; affection.<\/p>\n<p>Good company he was to us<br \/>\nTo read &#8211; religiously,<br \/>\nWhere it was safe to share our souls &#8211;<br \/>\nWrite better ways to be.<\/p>\n<p>No heart have I for coiled abyss &#8211;<br \/>\nNo crafted emptiness<br \/>\nWrapped up in ghostly metaphors<br \/>\n &#8211; And echoes of the rest.<\/p>\n<p>If like the birds now &#8211; each to each &#8211;<br \/>\nWe cry so differently,<br \/>\nWe still take comfort &#8211; back and forth &#8211;<br \/>\nthrough our sweet liturgies.<\/p>\n<p>Your work is done (&#8230; say &#8220;Hi&#8221; to Donne).<br \/>\nI miss your twinkly eye.<br \/>\nI thank you for the chance to talk &#8230;<br \/>\nGood-bye &#8211; dear friend, good-bye.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The ILA (Graduate Institute of the Liberal Arts at Emory University) has offered to honor Bob Detweiler by permanently naming one of their seminar rooms after him.
