On the March and Spread of Freedom

“Terrorism is the war of the poor. War is the terrorism of the rich.”
Leon Uris, Trinity, a Novel of Ireland, 1976

“Secrecy is the beginning of tyranny.”
    Robert A. Heinlein

“We cannot defend freedom abroad by deserting it at home.”
Edward R. Murrow (1908-1965), American Broadcast Newsman

In Bush’s closing remarks last night, he said

“I’m optimistic that we’ll win the war on terror, but I understand it requires firm resolve and clear purpose. We must never waver in the face of this enemy that — these ideologues of hate. And as we pursue the enemy wherever it exists, we’ll also spread freedom and liberty. We got great faith in the ability of liberty to transform societies, to convert a hostile world to a peaceful world.”

His refrain again is that “Freedom is on the march.” Man, I hate the idea of freedom marching. Really, marching at all has always bothered me. The foot stomping on the human face forever, the goosestep, the North Korean pagentry, the transformation of people into ant-like machinic structures. Ok, school bands are ok (grin).

Let’s think about long-term global plans for marching freedom around the world. Bush says that “Freedom and fear are at war. And freedom is winning.” He says he believes that Iraq “will be a model for freedom and democracy.” Do you agree? Just think about it.

I would like to remind you that we abandoned those within Iraq who wanted to be free and left rebels to be slaughtered after promising them support. That is where we missed our chance for Iraqi freedom. The Iraqi democratic opposition were continually rebuffed in Washington. Freedom, liberty, and a democratic vision should not, and really cannot be imposed by the USA or anyone else. Like many things, it must come from within. How can we say we defend freedom from the position of being occupiers, invaders? It is absurd. It reminds me so much of American views of the USSR and vice versa during the Cold War and the Red Scare.

Our own country had a revolution. We had help from others (notably France!) to succeed in that effort. Our ties to Great Britain are a little shadowy at times – there is some measure of secrecy in the history of that alliance – but we at least are no longer the colony of the empire that never sleeps. Now we want to be the empire “of freedom.” Have you ever heard anything more absurd? It’s a contradiction in terms!

Bush has a “global plan” – he wants this “New World Order” – a term familiar to conspiracy buffs. The phrase is strangely long-lasting and associated with multiple conspiracy theories involving world banks, Nazis, the Illuminati, social and mind control, interests of ruling american families, and so on. A notable quote:

“National Socialism will use its own revolution for establishing of a new world order,” said Adolf Hitler.

An article at the Conspiracy Archive claims that

“The planners of the New World Order know they must use, influence, and cater to all of these groups to accomplish the goals they are seeking, which are:

Consolidate everything.
Commercialize everything.
Classify everything.
Claim everything.
Control everything.

If it is fully empowered, free speech, personality, personal goals and decisions, individual responsibility, private property, private business, morality, Constitutional government, national sovereignty; and religious freedom can no longer be tolerated.”

Here’s a good one:

“One-fourth of humanity must be eliminated from the social body. We are in charge of God’s selection process for planet earth. He selects, we destroy. We are the riders of the pale horse, Death.”
Psychologist Barbara Marx Hubbard – member and futurist/strategist of Task Force Delta; a United States Army think tank

Sound kooky? Do a search – there’s an awful lot of material on this stuff. I doubt that much of it is true. However, I haven’t heard enough of the details of this long-term global plan for peace – have you? So far, I’m not a big fan of their work. It’s kind of like my initial reaction to the reunification of Germany – see, I didn’t really like their previous work…”

I’m more concerned about what the language of peace and freedom is covering up. He is just not a peace and freedom kinda guy. Both Afghanistan and China are top opium producers – perhaps the Bush family business interests in “red” China help to consolidate and co-ordinate the worldwide narcotics industry. George Sr’s part in the “War on Drugs” had the net effect of encouraging supply. Interesting tidbit: When Ross Perot was working to find POW/MIA, he had this to say: “Well, George, I go in looking for prisoners, but I spend all my time discovering the government has been moving drugs around the world and is involved in illegal arms deals…. I can’t get at the prisoners because of the corruption among our own people.” There’s the importation of cocaine into the U.S. during “Iran/Contra” and Eli Lilly (Indianapolis), one of the largest makers of precursor chemicals for cocaine and heroin production, had George Bush Sr on its Board of Directors. Oh yeah, and Eli Lilly was the company that first synthesized LSD for the CIA.

I don’t pretend to know all the deep dark secrets of this administration – I’ll have to satsify my curiosity when I’m old and perhaps things will be released.

But one thing I know – the timing and manner of the Iraq was not legal or justifiable. We have not yet acknowledged the costs of that part of the long-term global plan for liberty and peace that President Bush envisions.
Where were we for Afghan women before now? How do we encourage freedom and liberty around the world outside of military action? It seems – at least provisionally – that the situation in Afghanistan is pretty good, all things considered. Can we talk about ways to help countries get to that point with other methods? Let’s talk about those kinds of plans instead, instead of creating an assocation between issues of liberty and issues of terrorism.

Just a couple of interesting stories on our own country.
