New Strain of HIV

New Strain of HIV

Manhatten hospital patient’s virus is highly resistant to drugs and progresses rapidly to full-blown AIDS

“For the first time, doctors have diagnosed a form of HIV that New York City health officials say has two striking characteristics: It is highly resistant to antiviral drugs in a patient who had never been treated with the medications, and it quickly developed into full-blown AIDS. The infection defied the typical HIV-to-AIDS profile by apparently developing into AIDS in a matter of months, officials said. “This case is a wake-up call,” said New York City Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden. He said the strain is one that “is difficult or impossible to treat and which appears to progress rapidly to AIDS.”

Drug resistence in someone newly diagnosed has been pretty much unheard of until now. And to progress right into a dangerous clinial and immunological state of full-blown AIDS when it usually takes 7-12 years is even scarier.

The strain, termed 3-DCR HIV, resists three of the four antiviral drug classes. The patient has shown resistance to a total of 19 drugs. He has had multiple partners since October and used meth.

This is very very very very very very very very BAD folks. Again, VERY VERY VERY VERY bad!!!
