Bolton

Bolton

John Bolton is the kind of man with whom I would want to stand at Armageddon, if it should be my lot to be on hand for what is forecast to be the final battle between good and evil in this world.
— Jesse Helms, January 2001, as quoted in The Nation, May 2, 2005 edition.

Interesting in this regard is that it was Bolton’s signature on the letter to Kofi Annan in May 2002 renouncing any role for the U.S. in the International Criminal Court. That his office had no jurisdiction on questions of human rights or international justice issues didn’t seem to matter.

Some of these guys really do want to see the end of the world. They think they will survive it.
On”incoming,” Bolton staunchly advocates the revival of the “Star Wars” missile defense system; on “outgoing,” he rejects the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty. On the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, Bolton declared that “CTBT is dead.” He favored bombing Serbia.

I don’t think that Bolton will pass muster – not just because of his kiss up, kick down behavior, but because is another of these hopelessly corrupt Bushites. It is astounding to me that anyone can believe these are religious people.

According to the April 9, 2001 issue of Washington Post, Bolton is motivated by more than his ultra-rightwing ideology. Like many of these others, he also likes to be on the take and has no problem with conflict of interest. While he was promoting diplomatic recognition of Taiwan before various congressional committees in the 1990s, Bolton was being paid by the government of Taiwan for “research papers on UN membership issues involving Taiwan.” Bolton has denied that his testimony was in any way tied to the fee paid by the Taiwanese – and if you believe that…

But all these problems pale in comparision with the way he strong-armed the intelligence community into “producing the evidence” he and Bush wanted to see in order to justify their pre-planned war in Iraq. That intelligence was, of course, faulty. Whether it was an “honest” coercion based on ideology or whether it was always known and intended to deceive the American people depends on your interpretation. The ultimate result of it all does not. He should not be promoted – he should be brought to trial.
