Take Action

President Bush’s nominee for the Supreme Court has compiled an extensive, right-wing judicial record on numerous matters of importance to the protection of the rights and interests of ordinary Americans. Alito’s judicial opinions demonstrate that he is an out of the mainstream opponent of fundamental legal rights and protections for all Americans and must not be confirmed to the Supreme Court.

President Bush wasn’t willing to stand up to the far right — now it is up to the American people and our senators to stand up for the Constitution. Sign our petition urging your senators to oppose Alito’s nomination to be associate justice of the Supreme Court.

Here is the text of the People for the American Way Petition:

The Senate must reject President Bush’s attempt to reward right-wing special interests by nominating Judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court of the United States. Alito’s record as an ideological activist would make his confirmation a threat to civil rights protections, reproductive and privacy rights, environmental protections, religious liberty, and laws safeguarding workers.
I urge you to vote not to confirm Samuel Alito to a lifetime position on the Supreme Court of the United States.

  1. Did you really expect a Republican President to nominate a liberal judge to replace Sandra Day O’Connor? We need more conservatives on the courts to remove the liberal unbalance of the court and maybe we can get rid of these ridiculous court decisions.

I don’t see that Roe vs. Wade needs to be over turned and I really don’t see it happening no matter who the Senate confirms. I am much concerned over the courts decision to allow Eminent Domain to be usurped for purposes never intended by our founding fathers.

  2. Sandra Day O’Connor wasn’t a liberal – it might be nice to replace her with a person that represented more of the country, especially since Roberts is already on. Do I expect that to happen – not really, because I don’t see that democracy matters much to this bunch, who seem motivated only by power/greed.

I’m a strong pro-choice feminist, but this isn’t really about Roe v Wade, which is simply being used to manipulate conservative christians into voting for Republicans. The real issues for me at this point are executive powers, corporate influence (and protections, welfare, etc to the detriment of citizens), civil liberties and privacy, and (I’m with you on this) eminent domain.

I think it’s funny that you see the Supreme Court as liberal – didn’t they put Bush into office in an act of unprecedented judicial activism?
