Behind the Name

Behind the Name

Behind the Name

What is the meaning of your name? While a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, I did look at this site on the recommendation of Kerry and here is what I found for Heidi.

HEIDI f
Usage: German, English, Finnish
Pronounced: HIE-dee
Swiss pet form of ADALHEID. Heidi is the name of the title character in the children’s story by Johanna Spyri.

Ok, that I knew…

ADALHEID f
Usage: German (or ADELHEID, Dutch and German)
German form of ADELAIDE

Right…. but it also means "little miss," or so I’ve been told (as in "Swiss Miss")

ADELAIDE f
Usage: English
Pronounced: AD-el-ayd
From the Germanic name Adalheidis which was composed of the elements adal "noble" and heid "kind, sort, type". This was the name of the wife of Otto the Great, and also the wife of King William IV of England. A city in Australia bears this name.

The Noble sort…..

I already had something else somewhere or another.. ADELAIDE "noble person" (Teutonic). This is the French form of Teutonic Adalheidis.

Now for the middle name

LORRAINE f
Usage: English
Pronounced: lo-RAYN
From the name of a region in France which means "kingdom of Lothair". Lothair was a Frankish king, the great-grandson of Charlemagne, whose realm was in the part of France that is now called Lorraine, or in German Lothringen (from Latin Lothari regnum). This name may also serve as a combination of LAURA and ANNE.

Could I twist that into Lothlorien? Ring of Lothlorien? I was always told that it meant "battlemaiden" or "famous in battle" – but it doesn’t say anything about that here.

Oh, what’s in a name?
