Religious Southern Hospitality – not

Religious Southern Hospitality – not

I receive notices every couple of days from the neighborhood watch. There has been a bit of a crime wave in the area, and everyone is on edge. I’m getting very uneasy about some of these communications. Call me whatever you want, but I would never want to have to rely on some of these neighbors. I’m even thinking of getting a little more serious about defense in case of darker times. Yesterday, I got this email: Subject: stranger walking…

Take Torture off the Table

Take Torture off the Table

It’s wrong. It’s anti-American. It doesn’t even work. Tell Congress to Take Torture off the Table Congress needs to send a clear message to the Bush administration: cruel interrogation techniques – including mock execution, forced nakedness and induced hypothermia – are morally wrong and have to stop. Important legislation that sets one humane standard for ALL government agencies has been passed by the House, but has stalled. Keep the pressure on! Earth over the Moon

Earth over the Moon

Earthrise and Earthset over the Moon – wow. These high definition pictures were released November 12, 2007 by the Japanese space agency JAXA. The images were taken by the SELENE probe as it orbited the Moon at a distance of about 62 miles (100 km). The reception provides the opportunity to honor the recipients’ continuing research and scholarship beyond retirement. I was very pleased to represent Emeritus Professor Robert Detweiler at the Emory Heilbrun Awards Reception on Thursday. Professor Detweiler (my original…

Former Jehovah’s Witnesses – Take care, please

Former Jehovah’s Witnesses – Take care, please

I am becoming a bit concerned about the safety of former Jehovah’s Witnesses. When I received this latest email, I asked permission to post it. Reports of various annoyance activities toward vocal former Jehovah’s Witnesses seems to be increasing. I will try to do a post very soon about how things are heating up in the public sphere for JWs. Already Ex-JWs are demonized – at any sign of escalation, please never hesitate to contact the police. Barb and I…

Visual Bookshelf on Facebook

Visual Bookshelf on Facebook

My friend Amanda innocently suggested that I join her in adding the visual bookshelf application to my Facebook page. Little did she know that it’s just the sort of thing I would latch onto when I’m bummed out. I guess it’s better than some of the alternatives. I’ve already listed well over a thousand books that I’ve already read, and more than a hundred that I want to read. It’s ridiculous, because that doesn’t even begin to really address the…
