We saw Spiderman 3

Spiderman 3We promised Ben we’d go see Spiderman 3. Personally, I was pushing for the latest Shrek movie, especially after getting a tirade about violence and horribleness from another mom whose slightly younger kid wanted to leave Spiderman after about 15 minutes. Of course, they saw the IMAX version, and that’s probably a bit more intense.

Granted, there is probably a bit too much marketing toward the kids for the level of of the movie, but hey, there’s a megaton of money being made on those figures. Every mom and dad in America knows that.

Action figures are better than cigarettes, anyway.

Ben is still collecting his Star Wars stuff, and Power Rangers, and Transformers, and Fantastic Four, and even Batman. He’s already got a fair number of variations of the basic Spiderman figure. He loves them, carries a couple everywhere, has very complex worlds and plots involving them. Basically, I think they are dolls for boys, but I have to say that these articulated figures sure worked to retire anything like a Ken or GI Joe. For that I am grateful. I won’t tell you what I did to the few Barbie dolls I ever had…

Anyway, the movie was a rollicking good time had by all. Any movie with this heavy dose of vaguely uncanny doppelganger fun is good with me. Two photographer nerd superguys with the same basic taste in women – a blonde is a redhead, who is a blonde – mirrored kisses and guys who just don’t get it. Bits of temptation and hell, bits of redemption and caring – very intercontagious and structural. Instead of making truly complex characters, they separated out the good and bad and mixed them up a bit in color-coded quick time.

A little comic relief here and there, a couple of snappy insulting lines (nothing as good as “this is so not Spandex). All the women were great, although none of them got to be superheros. I loved the scenes between Peter Parker and his aunt May (Rosemary Harris) in particular. I don’t know if they pulled a Natalie Wood on this one or not, but if she was doing her own singing Kirsten Dunst has a very pleasant voice.

Sandman showed up, although he seemed a bit more like a sandstorm. I thought he was a sympathetic figure, actually. Nobody ever gives his daughter and ex a darned thing (big of you to “forgive him” though).

Let’s get Swamp Thing and Concrete into the action – what, they don’t count for anything? They’d rock.

Note for Spiderman 4, Spiderman Continues, and Spiderman meets Scooby-Doo: Never spend a lot of camera time on crying guys with bulgy eyes, especially if they do funny things with their mouths too. Tobey Maguire should not be allowed to cry on camera – he does not do it well. A death scene was almost ruined for me when I had to stifle my laughter for a second. Stick with the Goblin guy, and Sandman, for the crying parts. They both have better faces for it.

I think Tobey (Spiderman/Peter Parker) got a bit ripped off in this movie. Everybody else had better lines. The interesting part for his role was when he was briefly “wrestling” with the internal evil displaced onto the black meteorcrud-crystal lube-symbiote-thing. I liked the dancing, and many of his expressions were actually more appealing (to me) but no matter how they muss his hair or add mascara, Billie Joe Armstrong he’s not.He was starting to remind me of that guy that played Frodo, Elijah Wood. Ok for a hobbit, not so much for a superhero. I liked most of the other characters more.

Tofer youngI had seen Topher Grace (Christopher John Grace, b.1978) several times before I recognized him at all, and that was only because of a fleeting expression on his face. My, the gawky boy (Eric Foreman) from “That 70’s Show” sure turned out well. I’m guessing that, except for the costume, it must have been fun for him to play Eddie Brock/Venom. Tofer as Eddie BrockI wouldn’t have thought he could have done it. You can’t tell from the available stills from the movie, but he had a serious yum factor going. Well, he did until he became Venom – the teeth and little snaky black bits of symbiotic goo were fantastically scary and wonderful. And so was the Spock/Austin Powers raised eyebrow action, although the makeup was just that tad too heavy.Eyebrow action

I’m picky, huh? Well, I actually enjoyed the film very much. Two movies in two days. We haven’t done that in a long time. I think the last movie we went to before that was Superman. Oh yeah, that reminds me. The flag moment was a bit gratuitous, wasn’t it? At least they didn’t go all Captain America on us for this one.

Final message: You always have the choice to do the right thing.

Actually, you don’t always have that choice, because sometimes you don’t have enough information.
Sometimes you don’t have a good way of making a decision.
Sometimes there is no right thing to do.
Sometimes you know the right thing to do, but it is not within your power.

But I know what they mean. It’s a little streamlined for clarity. And we need the reminder that we can make choices.

The choices you make create the character that you are, which affects the way you think, which affects the way you make decisions and judgments, and the way you start to habitually make the same kinds of choices, etc. etc. When you have a choice, do the very best you can to think it through, and feel it through, and consider everything you possibly can – and then do what you judge to be the best thing, the right thing, in that context. All of that wouldn’t do very well at the end of a movie…

Just remember, even if you think you’re doing the right thing, you might still be wrong, and life isn’t fair.

Joe Frank has pointed out rather persuasively that while the truth may be slippery and elusive, you are always the author of your own lie.

But that’s a whole ‘nuther kind of movie.

I’ve just seen Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11.

I’m going to try to get a few of my thoughts down about this film while I’m still feeling nauseous and tearful. Tears or nausea, nausea or tears?

It’s hard to know where to start – with the woman in the lobby who blindly reached for me after the film, embracing a total stranger – a middle aged, middle class woman with tears running down her face – a woman who grappled me as though I were the remaining vine that prevented her from falling off the mountain? "What have we become?" she asked me in a broken voice as her tears moistened my left shoulder.

Or perhaps with the sudden anguished moan of my intellectual husband, a man not known for displays of emotion, upon hearing the words "can they ever trust us again"? That is, after being promised not to be put in harm’s way unless it were absolutely necessary, how can those who have always been first to stand up and serve (the american poor) ever trust in their country again?

The film has faults, to be sure. It uses a bit too much caricature, which is sometimes distracting. Although I agree that our president is developmentally stunted and anything but a compassionate conservative, a less cartoonish display would have been more persuasive. What one sees in Bush finally is what one sees in the eyes of any irresponsible and narcissistic alcoholic – the dry drunk. There’s a book in that and I hope to read it one day. I also found one section of the film truly offensive. While I understood that the listing of the so-called "coalition of the willing" (outside of the US and the UK) was meant to highlight the absurdity of including nations without a military, I certainly didn’t appreciate seeing ancient film footage of nosferatu to represent Romania, a viking to represent Iceland, someone smoking a marijuana pipe to represent The Netherlands, poppies for Afghanistan (Afghanistan?!?!), and so on. Along with the superimposition of western imagery upon the current administration (which admittedly does seem driven by the tropes of westerns and thrillers), it was both off-putting and ineffective.

What sticks with me, though, are other images. I’m more of an idea person, but images from this film already haunt me. The face of the policeman who "infiltrated" the Fresno Peace group, the pro-military woman who lost her son aimlessly wandering around the white house lawn, the guy who talked about the war at the gym and was reported to the FBI, the sobs of an Iraqi woman calling out to God to avenge the houses of her innocent family, the young man digging out a piece of his neighbor’s body from the rubble, the soldiers playing their killing soundtrack, other soldiers remorseful and confused by their experiences, the brave guy who said he would never go back to Iraq "to kill the poor" no matter what the consequences – so many images, images we didn’t see, images we should be seeing. Say what you will about Michael Moore – but what comes through for me is his anger for the sake of others, and his feeling for people. He turns a mirror on America, to show us with what we have become complicit and why the nations of the world have turned away. It is a profoundly patriotic film. Its message is, in one way, very simple. For those of you on the "religious" right, you should understand: It’s all about the money, a lot more than the customary 30 pieces of silver.

However, I also learned something that I did not know and honestly had not wanted to know. Moore, after all, does not spare either the left wing or the media from his critique. All those disenfranchized voters of the last presidental "election" couldn’t get one senator to sign a petition so that their argument could be heard. Person after person stood up in the proceedings painfully led by Al Gore himself. Time and time again, they had to say they had many signatures, but the required senatorial signature was "missing." One woman said she didn’t care that she didn’t have a signature, and Gore reminded her that "the rules do care." It reminded me of what I had forgotten somehow – how very angry I was at the Democrats. Where was John Kerry for those people, or any other democratic senator for that matter? Why couldn’t they get one signature? It brought back for me the day I watched the news in disbelief as Daschle did his 180-degree turn (not long after a certain airplane crash) on his Iraq anti-war stance. Really, where IS the left in this country? I miss those old academic Marxists of the Vietnam-war era, the theorists who remembered to ask the primary questions of money and power. This isn’t really a movie about serious dissent – it’s a mainstream american film in a country that has become deeply suspicious of intelligence and education, its traditional anti-intellectualism racheted up a notch or two. For those who might not have looked at some of this information, or who are patriotic but somewhat uninformed, this movie gives a big shove in the direction of actual thinking.

All of the family ties, the network connections, the money trails – Moore points out some of the major ones – enough at least to intimate that something of major importance about Saudi Arabia is still being withheld from the American people, for example. The section dealing all the connections and disconnections between the Bin Laden family, the Taliban of Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, The Carlyle Group, Enron, Arbusto Oil, Halliburton, and the Bush family – was probably a little confusing to some. If so, read any of the books on the shelves these days, from Michael Moore and others. Molly Ivins’ essays from the time of W’s Texas days are particularly enlightening with regard to such things as the Taliban. To me, it’s all about networks of power and money these days. It seems pretty clear that we mirror the terrorism network with our own nation-based criminal networks.

I don’t think Moore really got across the importance of the pipeline, or put enough into the effects of the Patriot Acts, but he did manage to convey some of what is happening to this country under this administration. Left-wingers of all types, libertarians, and republicans should see this film – the neo-cons are a different order entirely and I feel that much of America just simply doesn’t understand what is being taken from them, and what is happening in their name and to their own.

As our husbands returned from the restroom, the woman who had embraced me took a step back, embarrassed. Moving slowly, the four of us walked out into the blazing heat of the Georgia day. When you have a child and no babysitter, you don’t get to go to movies at night very often. I had to stand for a moment to breath deep against my heaving stomach. The parking lot shimmered in the sun, and for a moment, I felt profoundly alienated from everyone and everything. Then the tears came for me.

In this quick review of an anti-Bush novel by Nicholson Baker, Kurt Nimmo runs down some interesting examples of what happens to people who are openly critical of the president and this administration.

  1. Richard Humphreys of Portland, Oregon, sentenced to 37 months in prison for saying God might speak to the world through a "burning Bush” at a bar.
  2. Barry Reingold, a 60-year-old San Francisco retiree, visited by the FBI for talking about terrorism and September 11th, oil profits, capitalism and Afghanistan at a local gym.
  3. A.J. Brown, a Durham North Carolina freshman attending Durham Tech with the help of an American Civil Liberties Union scholarship, had the Secret Service and Durham police knock on her door for the crime of possessing an anti-Bush poster.
  4. Dan Muller and Andrew Mandell of Voices in the Wilderness in Chicago were grilled by the police and the Post Master after they told a clerk at the post office they did not want to buy stamps bearing an image of Old Glory.
  5. Or take the case of Steve Kurtz, whose grand jury case as a bioterrorist under the Patriot Act was dropped, but who is still being charged with procurement and possession of harmless biological agents. His artwork is critical of biotechnology and transgenic contamination.

He doesn’t mention the journalist here in Atlanta, visited and threatened by the FBI for reading a published article "Weapons of Mass Stupidity" at a local Starbuck’s.

Did you ever in your life think we would have to refight these battles? Our national mood seems to echo another authoriarian regime, and Nimmo closes with this quote.

Whether you are for or against the policies of this president, our freedom of speech allows us to be critical – openly, with freedom of assembly, through print or art (just as was done during the Clinton administration). The legal – and I think rightful – line is drawn at conspiracy and threats against the President’s life.

Let’s try to hold on to the First Amendment. It is one of the ideals for which this country stands.
